If you use Remote Desktop Connection on Windows, you’d probably encounter this once in a while. But this problem has plagued me several times and the usual quick fix “rebooting the server” or asking for DBA help seemed over-consuming and stupid in my opinion.

Who’s want to reboot a server every time you get a blank login screen. But this is perhaps one of the most annoying thing. I want to find a fix and I want to do it without disrupting the server or calling for help. I needed a self-help solution. Here’s how…
The first way to fix is when you bring up the Remote Desktop Connection program, you should un-check the “Bitmap Caching” option in the “Experience” tab. This is the recommended way from Microsoft.

However, this may or may not work. And in my case, I continued to get the black screen. And so, here’s the 2nd fix that works. Open a command line terminal window by clicking Start | Run and enter ‘cmd’ in the prompt.

Next login in your server using:

mstsc /v YOURSERVERNAME /console

Follow the on-screen prompt for username and password. Click Connect. That’s it !!! It’s easy….
