OpenOffice.org (OO.o or OOo), commonly known simply as OpenOffice, is a free cross-platform office application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats among others. As of November 2008, OpenOffice supports over 45 languages.
OpenOffice.org pioneered the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument file formats (ODF), which it uses natively, by default. It also supports reading (and in some cases writing) many legacy and current proprietary file formats (e.g.: WordPerfect through libwpd, StarOffice, Lotus software, MS Works through libwps, Rich Text Format), most notably including Microsoft Office formats after which the OpenDocument specification was “approved for release as an ISO and IEC International Standard” under the name ISO/IEC 26300:2006.Since version 3.0 the default format of OpenOffice.org is based on draft versions for OASIS ODF 1.2.
You’ll find documents send to you in .ODT (text), .ODS (spreadsheet), and .ODP (presentation) format. Since most of us has office, all you have to do is download a plugin here. After it’s installed, you’ll likely see a new menu option to open or save in OpenDoc format. Now you can use the option to read documents that you haven’t been able to before.
The benefit is that you won’t have to install another application like OpenOffice which is currently over 140Mb, and still be able to exchange files within Microsoft Office.
That’s it !!!
